SECORE Workshop 2007 (Puerto Rico)

The 3rd SECORE workshop was held from August 1-8, 2007, in Puerto Rico. It included practical training sessions in reproduction techniques of corals, as well as theoretical sessions focusing on the conservation of the threatened Caribbean Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata).

The workshop was attended by 20 aquarists and scientists of 13 instititutions from the USA, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

  • Improvement of coral larval culture with an innovative flow-through system ('larval kreisels').
  • Successful rearing of 150.000 Elkhorn coral larvae.
  • Distribution of cultured larvae to participating institutions for settlement and grow out (step-by-step protocols are provided by SECORE).
  • First successful cryopreservation of Elkorn coral sperm, which gives new perspectives for genetic banks of threatened corals.
