Ever since SECORE started at Rotterdam Zoo (The Netherlands) in 2001, it has contributed enormously to the development of breeding techniques of reefbuilding corals. Both broadcast spawners (coral species with external fertilization) and brooders (coral species with internal fertilization) are included.
We developed specially designed substrate tiles for the settlement of coral larvae, increasing their survival and further development. Once the larvae have grown into coral colonies, they can easily be transported to other aquaria and research institutions around the world.
Standardization of the breeding techniques as developed by SECORE paves the way for future research to increase our understanding in coral life history. This might prove to be an important step towards the sustainable management of coral reefs.
