Examples are the development of cryopreservation techniques to conserve larvae, sperm and eggs for establishing genetic banks. A possible role of such a ‘frozen zoo’ is to maintain a maximum of genetic diversity of a coral species. The role of symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) in the early stage of the coral's life history is another research focus as well as genetics in aquarium and field populations. All the different research topics serve one common goal: the restoration of coral reefs.
