Board Member
SECORE is looking for a passionate advocate, who believes in our work and wants to support our incredible team.
Assist SECORE staff and fellow board members to effectively pursue the organization’s conservation mission. This work includes monitoring SECORE’s finances, programs, and performance in relation to the strategic plan, and helping to grow SECORE’s fundraising capacity.
As the leadership body of the organization, the board is responsible for general governance:
- Supporting the mission of the organization and understanding its collective purpose
- Supporting the chief executive
- Supporting organizational strategic planning
- Supporting fundraising efforts
- Ensuring organizational and financial oversight, and legal and ethical integrity
- Approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and goals
- Promote SECORE to constituencies, audiences, organizations, and influential individuals that can help advance SECORE’s mission.
Further, each individual board member is expected to:
- Serve as an advocate and ambassador for the organization
- Understand the organization’s mission, programs, needs, and collective purpose
- Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings
- Participate fully in one or more committees or task forces
- Read the board materials and financial statements in advance of meetings
- Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve SECORE’s mission and benefit SECORE’s fundraising and reputational standing
- Give a meaningful personal financial donation, commensurate with interest and capacity
- Support the staff with consulting skills when they are sought. Your personal skills and experiences are valuable to the entire organization.
- Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the issues related to our work
- Respect the experience of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization
- Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance
- Follow the organization’s by-laws, policies, and board resolutions
- Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before and during meetings
- Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
